Netscape Dies as Predicted by Janco Over the Last 24 Months

The Browser and Operating System Market Share White Paper has just been released by Janco Associates..

Park City, UT –  Janco, the IT Toolkits website,  and the IT Productivity Center have just released its Browser and Operating System Market Share White Paper.  The major findings are that in the last 12 months Microsoft’s browser market share has continued to erode;  Firefox has maintained its number 2 browser position and now is used by almost 16% of all users; Google Desktop is gaining market share; and Netscape is now in a death spiral as users abandon it.  New in this white paper are recommendations on which browsers to use and not use.  A summary of Janco’s browser market share data can be found on the Janco’s web site (http://www.e-janco.com/browser.php), IT Toolkits site (http://www.it-toolkits.com/browser.php),  and the IT Productivity Center’s web site (http://www.itproductivity.org/browser.php).  In addition the full white paper with excel spread sheets can be purchased at both sites for $249.

On December 28, 2007 AOL announced that they will no longer support Netscape after February 1, 2008

Netscape has launched version 8 and no one noticed.  From interviews with many users there was a common so what.  In our opinion Netscape built it but they did not come.  As we said in our earlier study, we feel that Netscape is almost invisible with its market share.  The small gain that they had in market share is starting to erode.

In interviews with selected users, we found that many of them were turned off by the installation process.  We often heard the comments that the process was ad and pop-up window laden.  In addition several of the individuals we interviewed felt that the “overhead” associated with the ads in Netscape made it a much less effective tool to use.  However they did say they liked many of the new features, including tabbed browsing.
